Knife Attack at German Festival Leaves Three Dead and Five Injured
Berlin: (Knife Attack Germany) Three people have lost their lives, and five others have sustained serious injuries following a knife attack during a festival in Solingen, Germany, according to police reports. The attacker remains at large, and authorities suspect that the stabbings were carried out by a single individual.
The incident occurred around 9:45 PM local time on Friday in the Fronhof market square, where festivalgoers were enjoying live music at the Festival of Diversity, which was organized to celebrate the city’s 650th anniversary. Eyewitnesses described a chaotic scene as passers-by were randomly targeted.
Authorities have reported a total of eight individuals injured, with five in critical condition. Both victims and witnesses are being interviewed as police mobilize a large team to locate the suspect. Herbert Reul, the region’s top security official, stated that while the attack appeared to be targeted, the motive remains unclear.
Germany’s interior minister, Nancy Faeser, emphasized the urgency of apprehending the perpetrator, while Chancellor Olaf Scholz called for strict legal action against the attacker. The festival, which was intended to run until Sunday with various attractions, has now been suspended, leaving attendees in shock.
Local mayor Tim Kurzbach expressed his condolences on social media, saying, “It breaks my heart that an attack on our city happened.” The incident underscores ongoing concerns in Germany about knife violence, prompting discussions about stricter regulations regarding public knife carrying.
